The sound of the dice hitting the table and rolling until it lands on a number. Kids laugh with each other, cracking jokes while playing their games. Tabletop club is in session.
Students in the tabletop club meet after school every Wednesday in room 347 to play their favorite board games.
“My favorite part about tabletop club is being able to play [Dungeons & Dragons] because I don’t get to do it quite as often as I’d like,” junior Tyler Wood said. “I joined the club around the middle of last year.”
Despite there being many people in the club, Dungeons & Dragons (D&D) is a game that doesn’t require too many people to play.
“You don’t have to have a lot of people to play, you can play with 3-4 people,” Wood said.
D&D is considered a roleplaying game where players can pretend to be the character they created in the game.
“My favorite part about playing D&D is being able to create a character that I like and being able to roleplay as that character,” Wood said.
The tabletop club was started by Paige Sumers, the AP literature and composition teacher, and her kid Julian.
“She wanted someone to take over the club now that her son is graduated, and I always wanted to start a D&D club at a school because that’s something I really enjoy and I know that high schoolers also very much enjoy Dungeons and Dragons and tabletop games,” club sponsor and english teacher Dorris Schnider said.
D&D is also a game that Dorris is passionate about, which explains why she would want to run the club.
“Yes, Dungeons & Dragons is one of my favorite games,” Schnider said.
The tabletop club’s goal is to give students an environment where they can play games and meet people who are interested in the same games as them.
“The goal of this club is to provide a space where students can play Dungeons & Dragons or Magic the Gathering and other tabletop games in order to express their creativity,” Schnider said.
