Johnson has a spirit for sports, and within the last few years, wrestling finally became its own sport and obtained its own class period. This is due to the fast-growing team with an increase in guys and girls who want to take a shot at something new. Practice takes place every day at 6:45 a.m. in the ROTC room, with the season starting in February.
The wrestling team is getting ready for the upcoming season with head wrestling coach Charline Hagemaster who strikes with excellent coaching and inspiring motives. She pushes her wrestlers harder every day, motivating them to bring the action.
“The main principles we teach in wrestling are discipline and respect,” Hagemaster said. “I played this sport all throughout middle school and high school. All I’m trying to do is show people what this sport is about.”
Junior wrestler Joe Mata says its only up to himself to determine how far he may go.
“I am going to camps, getting here every day, waking up early in the morning,” Mata said. “It takes a lot out of you. It’s all mental. You just gotta keep going and never give up.”
Sophomore wrestler Jax Davis also has a high anticipation to succeed in wrestling, and he won’t let himself or his teammates down.
“You just gotta work out all the time and don’t miss practice,” Davis said. “I started wrestling to find a new challenge, I’m too far into this game and I can’t back out yet.”
