Cheer Rehearsals: Senior Alissa Palacios spiniting before routine at the Fort Worth Convention Center for the UIL Cheer competition on January 8. The school’s cheer team attended this years UIL State Spirit Competition that governs all of Texas’ sports, and to prepare for the hardy event the school’s cheer team practiced outside, going over the routine and counts for stunting. “Warm-ups are overwhelming because there are so many teams warming up at once and there’s so much yelling, but we all stayed pretty focused and didn’t falter,” freshman Alexis Martinez said. Cheer UIL State Spirit Competition

The Beginning of the Competition: Freshman Alexis Martinez (bottom) and sophomore Makaela Goss (top) during cheer in the prelims performance. The school’s cheer team performed in prelims that morning by starting with their band chant and making it all the way to their fight song successfully, regardless of what the team was feeling individually. “I remember being extremely nervous nervous when I first walked onto the mat because I knew how important our prelims performance was,” Alexis said. “But the second the band chant music started playing, I knew I was just doing what I have been doing since August and my nerves decreased.” Photo Credit: Avery Humphries

Collaborator Work: Sophomore Kensie McCracken spiniting before routine to get ready for the competition. Before performing, the team practiced their three elemental factors that made up the majority of the competition: their band chant, cheer, and fight song. They all huddled into one big group and discussed what they were about to face, and assuring they were going to take it on no matter what. “Every team has great days and hard days, and that’s part of being on a team,” Coach Stratton said. “I think this team is really resilient and has done a great job at no matter what’s been thrown at them or changes they had to make. Injuries, sickness, anything like that. They adjusted and changed and I think that’s why our program is so strong and going the right direction because they don’t give up no matter what.” Photo Credit: Avery Humphries

The First Hope: Sophomore Makaela Goss during band chant in the prelims tournament. Once the team had finished their prelims performance, they waited for the results to be called out for finals until 4 p.m., and that’s when they heard their name called up for one of the top 20 teams in the state to perform at finals out of 70 teams who competed. “It was such blessing to hear our name be called; our team started to jump up and down cheering and screaming in joy,” freshman Julianna Benavides said. A New winning Streak: Junior Reagan May (bottom) and freshman Olivia Lawrence (top) during cheer at finals. Once knowing they were moving on to finals, the cheer team practiced well and hard for the final bits of the competition and ended up performing last doing every element of their routine including their “situational cheer”, and in the end became the ninth team to win in the top ten winners for finals. “The competition was really just the icing on the cake to all the hard work we’ve been pouring into the program,” Coach Stratton said. “Not just this year but the previous years of building the program have finally started to pay off.” Photo Credit: Avery Humphries
