Student IDs have been mandated to be worn inside schools all over the district to ensure the safety of students in notable instances like school shootings. With JHS, this policy has been consistently enforced upon, as administration impositions often fall on deaf ears. Many students don’t find the importance of this policy or simply don’t want to ruin their fashionable outfits. Regardless, the policy has shown itself to become even more strict.
Recently, the policy has expanded to transportation, as students are now denied entry onto their respective buses without IDs. The problem is that students shouldn’t be denied access to transportation at all; people don’t want to be stuck at school. With working, busy parents or extracurricular activities, most students depend on school transportation to get home and to school.
On the flip side, the policy allows students to make sure they’re on the correct bus and ensures the safety of their peers. Students are also learning accountability and are expected to be responsible with their belongings and their IDs. Even so, this policy is unnecessary considering we all have tendencies to forget the little things. As long as a student has remembered their student ID number, they should be granted access to their bus. Considering new technology established in buses, drivers have the ability to search a student simply by their ID number.
Overall the concept of this policy is beneficial to ensure students are boarding the right bus and keeping the system “organized,” but in reality various factors can lead to a student not having their ID that occurs commonly. Whether a student forgets their ID or does not want to wear it, they should not be denied a ride. At the end of the day, we all want to go home and shouldn’t be denied that.
