Johnson High School girls basketball have been overcoming challenges and adjusting to the new foundation of becoming a better hard working team.
Varsity girls are on their way to the playoffs, as they won during their senior night on Feb. 10 with 60-51 points against San Antonio’s East Central High School. The program celebrated seniors Bailey Barret, Mayah Smith, and Gabriella Mendoza.
“Getting a new coach and having new opportunities, and just wanting to be better from previous years,” sophomore JV player Ariana Perez said.
Perez expressed how the coaches continued to push them hard everyday, with a new head coach, who is building a stronger foundation than before.
“Working together as a team is not all about one person, but unity… we’ve also gotten more hardworking,” Perez said.
Barret stated that the program’s new coach, Coach Cuevas, has brought them to become better teammates and learn to build a strong sisterhood throughout the season alongside oncoming seasons for the JV and younger Varsity players.
“I think the way [coach] tries to bring us together, with team bonding,” Barret said.
Smith expressed how this year has brought them the chance to restart the program. That new year means a fresh start for all players.
“New core values that we have to play by and practice everyday has really helped us improve as a whole,” Smith said.
These girls all overcome many mental blocks and challenges as a team, that brings them together and forms unity. Girls Basketball players have stated that they have come to grow and improve in this very competitive sport. They said, that these coaches have worked very hard to make sure the girls enjoy the season, while pushing through every challenge that is thrown at them, each one of them reminds them how to remain strong and confident throughout the year.
As Coach Cuevas said, ¨Never fear failure, instead fear of staying the same.¨
